Danakil Depression, also called Afar Depression, is a geological depression in the Horn of Africa, where it overlaps Eritrea, the Afar Region of Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Danakil is well known as one of the cradles of hominids, containing the Middle Awash, site of many fossil hominid discoveries, site of the world’s oldest stone tools, and Hadar, site of Lucy, the fossilized specimen of Australopithecus afarensis.

Erta-Ale means “Smoking Mountain” in the local Afar language and its southernmost pit is known locally as “the gateway to Hell”. Erta Ale is centered over the east African rift valley system and the volcano comprises a mainly Mafic material which has been brought up to the surface caused by unroofing of the mantle due to the formation of the pull-apart basin.

Day 1

Fly to Gondar & Drive to Sankaber

Morning Fly to Gondar. Upon arrival, you will have sightseeing in Gondar. Founded in 17th C by Emperor Fassiladas Gondar was once the capital city of Ethiopia. During those times Gondar was center and source for art, music, and literature of Ethiopia. Your visit to Gondar will include the Royal enclosure, King Fasil’s bath and the fascinating Debrebirhan Selassie church which is well known for its fascinating ceiling paintings.

Afternoon you will drive to Debark where the Simien Mountains National Park Headquarters is located. After finalizing the formalities drive to the first campsite ‘Sankaber’ You will be dropped 2 hours walking distance from the first campsite where you will start trekking through the dramatic landscapes and spectacular scenery of the national park. Spending the night at Sankaber campsite is advisable for acclimatizing the Altitude.

Day 2

Sankaber – Geech

After breakfast, you will trek from Sankaber to Geech enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Simen Mountain which will take from 6-7 hours. After crossing the valley you will have the views of Jinbar Waterfall. While trekking to Geech you will see the most spectacular landscape of the Simen Mountains, troops of Gelada, lammergeyer, and different types of vegetation.

Day 3

Geech – Chenek

After having breakfast at Geech campsite, you will have another wonderful trek through the grass plateau of Chenek with vegetation of the Giant Lobelia plants. On this trek Kedadit Gorge, Imet Gogo and Enatiye are the most remarkable viewpoints you will enjoy most on this day. You will extremely appreciate the fabulous Simien Mountains landscape viewing 360 degrees. At this summit and viewpoint, you can see the canyon below, distant ridges, and view the seemingly never-ending valleys.

Day 4

Chenek – Gondar

Morning Enjoy the scenery around Chenek for those who are like to trek more early morning trek to ‘Buhait ‘and afternoon Drive to Gondar for overnight

Gondar – Addis Ababa

Early Morning Fly to Addis and End of our tour.
